My first impressions about the Public Beta release:
I had some time to play this TC also with raTTy and Scorpio, however, I'm pretty sure that a few veterans from U2XMP were (or still are) a bit dissapointed about it. Well I for myself expected a bit more (I'm pointing at the many bugs remaining) since it was announced as a Beta release. For me a Beta release is quite bug fixed already but IMO it would be better named as Alpha release. Nonetheless, the TC looks still promising and I think it's on the right way. There is still a lot of work to do until it will reach a decent quality but I'm pretty sure FMI will manage that during the next months.
FMI is currently working on a patch which should eliminate many bugs showing up in the current Public Beta release and they try to release it before Christmas which IMO is really needed.
I've noticed that it still uses a lot of resources in order to achieve a decent framerat which means you have to tweak your settings or it will be pretty choppy to play. After tweaking it becomes pretty playable but there are many annoying bugs floating around which are disturbing overall game play. Compared to U2XMP the game play seems to have changed a bit which is not welcomed really but I guess this is due to the UT2004 netcode and code base and maybe also problems while porting specific things. The weapons seems not really balanced yet, there are issues with almost each weapon if you compare it with U2XMP. The crosshairs were much cooler in U2XMP and also more useful than the new ones but I guess these will be improved as well. Furthermore I don't really like the chewing gum looking HUD they've implemented and a few colors (indicators) seems to be wrong. Furthermore I hope they can improve the weapon effects as they don't look and feel really comfortable compared to U2XMP. Well there are many issues/changes ATM which should be investigated and bug fixed to reach the quality of U2XMP IMO and I hope that FMI will be able to do so.
The textures of the maps, characters and weapons look very the same as in original XMP which is quite satisfying. Also the game play (dodge jump boosts etc.) seem to be pretty accurate and feel pretty right. There are a few issues regarding normal dodge though but this could be also my client not able to compensate FPS problems.
All in all, it really looks impressive and I know it's a lot of work to port something like U2XMP in a decent quality. We have to wait for further releases to make a real decision about the TC, so far it's just a lot of work which has to be done first. |

Hey Jb
It's defenately worth to try it out but don't expect too much with the current release because it's pretty buggy. It first needs quite a lot of work until it reaches the same quality as U2XMP. Nonetheless, it still should you give an impression about what the idea of the game is. |

Yeah, I've heard that the current Linux built is even worse, well wait until further releases/patches.

Hi all!
UTXMP was suppose to be my dream coming true...
LOL time to wake up and come back to reality.
Cause the game did not live up to my expectations.
Were to start...
I will skip the bugs because it?s a beta or alpha.
The game feels and looks like it?s made for noobs, everything is big specially the HUD.
But after playing a bit more I kinda forget that but I can never escape it.
Just feels clumsy.
The sounds for some of the weapons are well just not right!
The tank does sounds great!!
So with both legs on the ground again I think
it?s a nice game but not nearly as great as U2xmp
I can only hope the bug fixes do the trick for me.
Cause the basics are there and that?s what made U2XMP great!
So we all need to keep an eye on UTXMP because it can be the best game of 2005! |

I think it's on the right way but it needs defenately work and I'm sure FMI is working hard to get most out of it.
I think there will be a patch or similar soon. |

After I've installed the patch, the game seems much more stable. Many annoying bugs could be removed but there is still quite a lot to do. Now it's actually playable IMO and I had fun again playing it the last time. I hope we can have some games soon all together. I'm sure Scorpio will join as well sometimes |

Yes, I have to say the patch did a lot of good work indeed, many fixes.
There are still some things they have to fix.
The weapon balance is not so good but I guess that?s one of the hard things to get right.
Happy to say its fun to play now!! Playable indeed!
And if you guys gonna play all together be sure to invite me I would like that! |

well that woz fun would be kool if we can get everyone 2gether 2 play this a few times ( *nudge nudge* Jb & RaTty ) dunno, has anyone got a good enough connection to get all eS + Scorpio on a home server? myne definitly isnt good enough! lol
I liked it, allot better than my first try (xmp) probly coz i understood the game a bit better, as it is pretty complex (seemingly, at first...although its not really), well it definitly seems slower than UT (I know Lom thinks the opposite lol) but i really like the structred approach the game.
there are a few things i dont like, I really think the Sniper rifle should have an instant kill trigger, for example, if you get a head shot, you get instant death.
the movement, which i finally understand, is really nice, although it is a bit irratating not being able to escape as fast when your rocket pack runs out lol of course once i remember to press 'Sprint' this will be ok lol
I really really dont like the vehicles tho :S sorry lom, i know you love them lol I wonder if it would be possible to put ONS vehicles in maps, coz i think they are really cool. Also i didnt notice any flying vehicles? are there any? The main thing i dont like about the vehicles is the fact you have to see all the edge of the window and stuff. I dont like that, if you could get rid of it, that would be kool. I like my screen unclutered.. .Tiny-semi-transparent-Hud, no weapon hand, and only a little dot for a crosshair. he whole feel of the interface was to 'chunky' for me, pherhaps when they fix the bug for the interface (ie cant remove weapon hand and change Hud size) it will be allot better
I know i said allot of negative stuff here, well in truth i really enjoyed playing! lol |

Nice, that you enjoyed it even it must have been a bit odd to play since you hardly know what to do But that's normal so don't feel bad because of that. XMP needs alot of knowledge and experience in order to get most out of it. First, it's important to understand the basic concept of XMP. I've forgotten to tell you that each base starts with 2 artifacts. The goal is to steal the other artifacts from the enemy and keep yours save. The team who will have all 4 in their node will win. Usually it's time limited so it won't go on forever lol. Another possiblilty to win the game is to hold all available energy sources until the enemy hasn't any energy anymore. It's pretty difficult to do but sometimes it's possible

Yeah that would be nice. Actually I wanted to invite everyone yesterday but only miszt was online so it wasn't possible really lol.

As you know, I have a server at home for testing my Unreal servers settings and to play some LAN's with some friends of mine. The machine itself is pretty powerful. I could easily host the same stuff we had while in TGP lol but my connection isn't that good of course. I think it should be fairly k to play with all eS members and Scorpio together on my server. At least it will do it for showing some basics for all, start to figure out some basic strategies and to explore the maps.
| Quote: | | I liked it, allot better than my first try (xmp) probly coz i understood the game a bit better, as it is pretty complex (seemingly, at first...although its not really) |
I assure you that XMP (the original one) is still far better than UTXMP but note that UTXMP is made from the community with some assistance from the original developers of XMP. And also remember that it's still Beta. Most veterans don't play UTXMP much because it's still too buggy and the feel of the game isn't right ATM. The magic is somehow missing lol. Nonetheless, I think it's on its right way. It's not easy to port such a game in a nice way and means alot of work for not professional developers. FMI has only a few but pretty talented mappers, coders and the like where as the original developers were payed for the job and could work full time on the game.
| Quote: | | well it definitly seems slower than UT (I know Lom thinks the opposite lol) but i really like the structred approach the game. |
Negative. As long as you don't exactly know what to do, it must be really slow for anybody who tries to get into the feel of the game, especially because the maps are usually much bigger than UT maps. The movement is more complex compared to UT and it's pretty essential to know the maps and the right movement. You can be really fast but again, you have to know how
| Quote: | | the movement, which i finally understand, is really nice, although it is a bit irratating not being able to escape as fast when your rocket pack runs out lol of course once i remember to press 'Sprint' this will be ok lol |
Well would you say it's irritating as well, when you drive with your car somewhere and suddently the car stops because there is no fuel anymore? I told you that in XMP everything is limited compared to UT. You have to know every aspect such as how much personal energy is available for yourself as well as your overall energy for the team which controls the technologies available. After some time you won't need the hud that much anymore and you also won't see it anymore really lol. Your brain is able to only focus on the essential stuff but it needs some practice. If you go in a fight you have to know what your doing, meaning it's important to understand that you are a part of a team and if you die you will lose time which could be used to defend the base, hack energy sources or deploy points, secure important spots on the map and keep the enemy busy. Also the spawing is limited compared to UT which means you cannot directly spawn after you died. Usually every deploy point is timed differently (currently in UTXMP, many maps are timed at exactly the same second which is a bug) Soemtimes you want to spawn in the base because there was just an enemy who killed you and you want to save your artifacts but the deploy at the base will redeploy people after 20 seconds. Well maybe it's better to find another deploy which isn't set to 20 anymore so you can deploy earlier and maybe wait somewhere to catch the artifact carrier and surprise him.
| Quote: | | I really really dont like the vehicles tho :S sorry lom, i know you love them |
I don't love them really but they fit really well for XMP. But again, it's still a Beta and the vehicles need alot of improvements. The raptor feels not right at all and this was far the coolest vehicle I've every played with well in XMP. Now it has the physics of the UT's raptor I think which is really stupid and makes the raptor poor IMO.
| Quote: | | lol I wonder if it would be possible to put ONS vehicles in maps, coz i think they are really cool. |
I think that would be possible but you would need a mutator for that. The problem being is that XMP is really, really balanced in all aspects even if it has alot of factors. The vehicles fitted really nice in XMP but as I said the UTXMP's vehicles need improvements to reach similar quality.
| Quote: | | Also i didnt notice any flying vehicles? are there any? |
There aren't. You have 3 vehicles available. Raptor (fast, not much shield), Juggernaut (tank, powerful but slow) and Harbringer (transport vehicle). I know that there were ideas and plans to implement a drop ship for XMP but since Legend Entertainment go shut down, they couldn't finish XMP. Maybe FMI will make additional vehicles or the community but I think it will be really difficult to implement new things without breaking the balance.
| Quote: | | The main thing i dont like about the vehicles is the fact you have to see all the edge of the window and stuff. I dont like that, if you could get rid of it, that would be kool. I like my screen unclutered |
Well XMP has a few more realistic things than UT lol such as limitations in sights. I agree that such things need tweaking. That was much better in XMP but the edges still were there. Well I never had problems with that since its the same of every player and as I said you already, you most likely won't see such things anymore after you played a while.
| Quote: | | Tiny-semi-transparent-Hud, no weapon hand, and only a little dot for a crosshair. he whole feel of the interface was to 'chunky' for me, pherhaps when they fix the bug for the interface (ie cant remove weapon hand and change Hud size) it will be allot better |
Theres an option in the settings to scale the HUD but it's bugged. It goes back to default. I agree that the HUD is shitty, I don't like it either. It looks like a chewing gum and everything is way too big. In XMP the HUD was much smaller and way cleaner. Where I cannot agree is with the hand. I don't see any problem at all with that. That's exactly the same as it was in XMP. Everything below the weapon I never use to see what's going on and the crosshair always points at the middle of the screen so I have no problem at all with this. Actually I think it's pretty the same as in UT. Ever hold a real weapon? Well do you see any hands and arms while holding it? Probably yes but if you have shot a while with guns you don't notice such things anymore.
| Quote: | | I know i said allot of negative stuff here, well in truth i really enjoyed playing! lol |
Well there are alot of things which needs improvements and I think it will become pretty nice when the final release comes out. I don't see that really as a lot of negative things because these were more details. It's much more important that you like the basic concept of the game and the feeling of movement, goals to achieve and fighting situations.
Well would be nice to have some games soon all together |
