Hi,
I hope this post will match into this board.
In the last days my pc crashed while playing UT2004 (Monitor freezes for some seconds and goes into standby mode, then I have to reset the system). Somedays i can play more than 2 hours without problems and sometimes it crashes after 20 minutes or so. It's really annoying when this happens in wave 24 or 25 when most players are out.
I got this hardware: MSI Radeon 9800 Pro Plus (has a 9800 XT chipset), Asus K8V SE Deluxe, 512 MB Kingston Value RAM, A64 3200 Newcastle, beQuiet 400 W power supply, Sound Blaster Live 5.1 digital; OS is W2K SP4.
With Catalyst drivers v4.9 I got sometimes the message that VPURecover has reset the graphic processor.
I tried the following to fix this problem: installed Catalyst v4.10 and VIA Hyperion 4in1 v4.53, installed the driver for my monitor and set the AGP clock in BIOS from 8 to 4; latest BIOS is installed.
It seems the problem appears more often after installing the sound blaster card. The sound blaster's interrupt is not shared, the vga card shares it's interrupt with the onboard firewire controller.
Hope this are enough informations.
EDIT:
I don't think it's a temperature problem, I have a constant cpu temperature of 51?C and a chassis temperature of max 35?C. The error appears suddenly, without any lag in the game some seconds before. Cool'n'quiet is activated. |

Hi FMC, sounds like a pain in the butt but i dont think it is a big problem, try uninstalling the sound card completly and see how everything runs without it, (when windows trys to reinstall it say no), i know that unreal had allot of problems with sound when it first came out, but i am suprised if sound blaster is causing the prob,
If that doesnt help, then uninstall firewire, and see how it works then, i am not sure why the interuppt is shared with the g-card, What are your bios pnp settings?
I take it your unreal is uptodate? I have had allot of problems with unreal, until i installed the latest (3334 maybe?)
also make sure your sound blaster drivers are uptodate
hope this can help you, let me know about your bios pnp settings if this doesnt work |

Sound Blaster usually is the problem. It's known causing hardware problems sometimes. Other than that it's a great sound card I would try to take out your sound card and deinstall the sound card drivers. Then go and play a while. I had problems with IRQ and sound blaster as well. I could solve that by just placing the sound card in another slot and it worked properly again. Maybe this can help as well. If it's not k then let us know.
Also try what miszt suggested, could help as well |

I had exactly the same problem and solved it exactly the same way.
But I also did one other thing. FMC's appears to have on-board audio hardware. I suggest disabling any on-board hardware support in your bios settings that you are not actually using.
For example, you should also disable the LAN support unless your computer is on a LAN and doesn't have a separate LAN card installed. Leaving these features enabled unnecessarily increases competition for system resources and the likelihood of conflicts.
Good luck. |

Thank you for your answers

I'll try this at last, first I want to use the other hints.

I use firewire sometimes, anyway I have it disabled now for testing. The interrupt sharing of the agp slot with onboard firewire and pci slot 1 and 5 is hardware based (is this the right term ) and can't be changed; the bios pnp settings are all set to auto.

OMG, I missed the last patch , had still v3270. Okay, patch is installed now. The sound blaster card has the newest drivers.

I got the same idea yesterday in the evening and put the sound card into another pci slot. Now it shares it's interrupt with the onboard lan device. I disabled the cool'n'quiet feature too but after 2 hours playing the pc crashed again

I have disabled all devices that are not used (onboard audio, raid, com2 and now firewire too)
Somewhere I've found the hint to disable agp fast write. I've done this too. I'll play now with the newest ut patch, without firewire and disabled agp fast write. If this won't help I'll kick the sound card out of my system and enable the onboard audio device.
I read something about a benchmark that is integrated in UT2004, but I don't know how to start it. My idea is to let it run some hours instead of playing and waiting for the crash. |

I doubt disabling fast write will help, as it seems to be the sound cardbut try you shouldnt have to take the sound card out, just uninistall it in the device manager, also, disable everything in the bios you dont use, like kafka said, pherhaps disabling the LAN will clear up the interupt share and it will work
My best suggestion, is switch to Linux, install everything, and have trouble free Unreal 2k4 gaming....(not trouble free everything else lol but hey )...i guess this isnt a very helpful suggegstion really..sorry lol |

After some days testing with the new UT2004 patch, deactivated agp fast write and without firewire i had only 1 crash, but sometimes a black screen for about 10 seconds, after that I could continue playing.
After starting a kick vote against my sound blaster card I put it out of my pc, activated the onboard sound device, and now i have no more problems
Think I buy me another soundcard from Terratec and hope it will work properly.
Thank you all for helping me

I'm not a friend of Bill Gates but actually I haven't enough time to setup a linux system. At the moment I use Mozilla as webbrowser and mail client, that's enough open source software for me |

At the moment I use Mozilla 1.7.2 and it works fine Maybe with a next update I'll change to Firefox. Does it support profiles? My wife has her own bookmarks and settings. |
