I have queation to you people out there Smile

I would like to build a site, like this one!
I have already buildt a site:

(It is dutch language!). I worked here with HTML, CSS and a very little piece off PHP.
Now I would like to know how you make such a site like this.
Like that menu for example. Could you guys give me a template for that? Like I mean a menu and a main page and then on top off the page a logo.
Can you guys build me some kind off a template? Confused
I myself can build the rest. But with this menu do you need to build a kinds of images and then you float the actual menu over it? I have some understanding off this but that is all. Or you could give me some very good tutorials. (I always find buggy tutorials)

By the way I am looking to the skin: Gametech

I hope this makes it a bit clear what I am trying to tell.

will give you Nuke Platinum, this basically has lots more stuff to it, and bug fixes and stuff, well Lom and Ratty can give you more info on the diffrence between the two
there are others,

this is Xoops, another CMS, i used to use it on my web site (have my own now) it is less complicated than Nuke, but has lots of kool features still

for all CMS you can download themes and style, just google nuke styles or xoops styles and you can choose from litraly thousands of styles, if you are artistic you can even make your own, (u'll need some php knowledge i suspect, dunno havent made one myself)

hope this helps Very Happy I am making a very basic CMS if you want somthing less complicated than nuke or xoops, it will give a basic webpage, with images/links/downloads/members area/email/private messagiing, well that will be finished in about 3-4 months, if you can wait Smile (.. my site is

Well it depends on what you want to do now. If you want to build your site from scratch, PHP-Nuke and any other CMS isn't the best way because you always will have stuff which you don't need and other stuff which you miss. The idea of a CMS is to keep everything integrated with each other and keep the style of the whole site in every page as well as built in features. Most things are set up already so you only need to add the content, the rest is available already, hence content management system Wink

I'm not really into html and PHP coding so this is my only way to build up a decent web site with a little knowledge of PHP and databases.

Well PHP-Nuke/PHP-Nuke Platinum has many built in features which are quite useful to build a community web site like you have on LXY or we have here on eS. Althought LXY uses another CMS called PHPKit. I don't know much about this CMS so you should have a talk with raTTy about PHPKit. PHP-Nuke / PHP-Nuke Platinum has a pretty good admin section where you can configure almost all aspects of the web site fairly easy. For instance, PHP-Nuke comes with the phpBB2 forums (the forums we have on our web site) and this can be a nice advantage if you plan to built a forum anyway. The phpBB2 forum is built into PHP-Nuke so you won't need to figure out how to implement such a forum into your web site. Also all the account handlings and security checks work throught the whole site which gives you more security as well as more comfort for all the users. Adding stuff to your site usually gives more risk regarding security. Since PHP-Nuke will be developed and tested by the PHP-Nuke authors, it becomes pretty secure and also pretty bug free.

If you plan to use a PHP-Nuke CMS, I suggest you to get PHP-Nuke Platinum (http://www.techgfx.com). Basically Platinum is PHP-Nuke (the one from nukecops) but heavily modified. It has the latest security implemented as well as a tons of nice addons for your web site already built in. When I used the normal PHP-Nuke, I had to install a lot of hacks and other addons myself which can lead to bugs which are difficult to solve (at least for me since I'm not really a html / PHP coder). You will have more or less what you see on our web site (all the features). I haven't added many custom stuff myself because the most things are built in with Platinum already.

Well have a look on techgfx and get yourself a bit informed about all the features available and compare it with the normal PHP-Nuke. Maybe the normal one is k already for you because you don't need so many addons built in.

If you decide to go for a PHP-Nuke CMS, I probably can help you get started with it and help to solve some problems Wink

Well let me know Smile

The Navigation is, of course, a built in feature so you wouldn't need to do that on your own. You only will need to activate/deactive modules which you want to appear on the menu. So as you can see here in this example, it's more a matter of how you want to set it up as how you have to code this particular thing. How the site appears otherwise, this usually depends on the theme you use. Take a look throught all the themes we have here on our site and compare the appearance (what is the same - beside the colors and images of course - and what is different. Just take a look on how links appear in the forums for example. The differences are theme based and the rest is PHP-Nuke itself which explains why certain things appear always the same on every theme.

If you are looking for particular code on certain features like the navigation, I can give you some code examples or templates and you might get an idea about how to do this in PHP. But maybe it's more useful if you just download a package and take a look yourself into it. If you have never played around with Nuke, it's probably a lot of stuff you have to understand first before you actually can figure out, what is doing what. Well just ask and I can post some examples if you need it Smile

I hope this helps a bit Wink

no dont host it at home, coz if it gets busy it will eat up your bandwidth and make it pretty damn hard to use! Plus there are not many ISP's that will give you a single perminant IP address, well not in the UK anyway, dunno about europe, and you will have to buy a domain name anyway which is not much less than the cost of a hosting package

get a hosting company, mine is dataflame.co.uk which is really good, and they will install allot of stuff for you (including Nuke Xoop, also LOADDZZZ of other stuff)) for free, infact you just click a few buttons and it does it automatically! definitly usefull if you have never setup somthing like nuke before Smile and the price is really good aswell, worth checking out.

you have to pay extra for more MySQL databases (this is normal) but you can use as many PostgreSQL databases as you like, most big-name products for web sites will let you choose to use either MySQL or postgre, am pretty sure Nuke does aswell

Well again, it really depends on what you want to do with your site. I would say that if you want to have a look at PHP-Nuke or any other CMS, try to install it on your local PC and test it out until you come to a conclusion. If you only expect a few members or want to have only a few members, I don't see a problem really to host it on your local PC. You always can get web space from a provider and switch your site if you see that the performance is getting worse for you.

About having domain names with dynamic IP's. Well actually it's not a big problem to have a dynamic IP and also a domain name. You can take a look at this free service, which I'm using now since over 3 years without any problems:
Please login to see this link
Get registered or Log in

Of course, you cannot use a real domain name with this free service but you could also get real domain names with it I think but that would cost a bit. You can choose a name of your choice, lets say Beyonder. Then you have to choose a domain from their list, like dyndns.org, homeip.net etc. Your URL will be something like:
Please login to see this link
Get registered or Log in

When your IP gets updated (new IP from your Provider) dyndns will recognize this and update your IP to match with beyonder.dyndns.org again so you don't have to do anything really and your server should be always reachable with beyonder.dyndns.org Smile

As you can see, for having a small site for a few people, I think this solution is pretty nice also because you won't spend a single coin for all these services.

If you plan to run a bigger community and want to let it grow then I would suggest you to look for a provider. It's not expensive these days anymore IMO.

Though, it'll take about an hour or a bit more until your new IP is matched with your domain name. But I don't access my server much from outside and my server was always reachable when I had to. If you need the update instantly, there are a few tools on the web which do exactly that. As soon as you get a new IP, the tool will logon to dyndns and replace the old IP with your new IP immediately Smile
