Hi everyone! As some of you may know I am busy with a new case for some time now trying to find a way to make it look very special and nice. In short I'm modding a PC case.
Ok I just had the basic thinking out the, theme and the things I wanna do for sure. For the other parts I'm still thinking what I will do with it or how.
But I thought it might be nice to post what I have so far and were I'm working on here so you all can give me some ideas and know what I'm doing in my free time(besides gaming)!
A while ago I went shopping for a nice case so after going trough over 1000 pc cases on the net and going to shops too look at the best ones I could find I decided to buy the Cooler Master CM Stacker.
IMO this is the best case with the most possible options available on the marked today. And I was looking for an ATX/BTX case because I'm not sure BTX will ever break trough but if it does I don't wanna have a great modded pc and not be able to use it in the future.
Now let me tell you what I'm planning to do with this case…
I decided the theme after I bought the case, because I take functional propertie before looks and show off stuff. I bought a CM Stacker without a window in it but on the side there was a roster for a possible extra fan. Of Corse I did want a window in it, just not the standard one. Because of the roster on the side the shape of the window already had to be something were a 32 cm hole could fit in that's how big the hole would be after I cut out the roster.
As you can see I also put 2 new switches in the case cause I did not like the standard one's. These have a blue and red lighted colour ring around them and fit nice with the look of the case. Was some work to get them in cause they were very big and deep had to drill holes in the frame of the case to get the job done.
So options were limited cause I did not want to have a too big of window showing all the cables and things that are just not so cool to see. And In my opinion a 32 cm round hole was very big already!
So the decided to keep the shape unwilling to make it bigger, but a round shape is very lame… so I thought up a way to hopefully when its done makes it cool. So what can you do with a round window of 32cm to make it cool and possibly make it seem less big showing less of the inside of the case.
I came up with engraving the glass window! When you engrave something into glass and you shine a light on the side of the glass the engraved parts light up or glows in the colour of the light.
Also engraved parts are hard to look trough making the window show less of the inside of the case.
I came up with engraving the earth, cause its round make the window shape look like its mend to be round. Mean I could just engrave a scorpion on the glass but that would be less cool IMO cause then the whole thing wont come together. Also the earth got nice big land mass and cloud's that abstract vision.
I took the photo because it has a nice position of the land mass and clouds. And got water on the right places lie in the middle.
The idée is to make to glass windows with some space between them one will only get engraved with the earth land mass and the other only with earth's clouds the water will be clear glass so that's were you can see the inside of the case.
I'm still busy photo shopping but this is what I got so far.
The land mass will get a green glow and the clouds will get a white glow.
This wile be done by, as I said before, some collared led's around the side of the glass window.
The inside of the case will be blue making the whole earth/window and inside of the case come together as one.
So now I covert the window the theme is picked space!
And what do you see when you look up to space? Stars! And the fact of the matter is I like stars! Speak to my imagination and just guess were the name Scorpio came from…So around the window I wanna make twinkely stars. I want the starts to randomly go on and out slowly and maybe show a pattern like a scorpion and the name Scorpio once every hour or so, For this I needed a nice programmable processor. Lucky for me that's where I have studied for, so well here is a picture of the schematic, its not done but well its almost, when its done I will send it to a company who will make a print board out of it so I can solder the electronic components on it and build it into my pc,
As you can or maybe can not see I use a small smd processor and a I2C buss to control 16 I/O extenders. Making me able to control 128 led's (stars).
I still got some processor ports free witch I will use to control some other things in my PC case like the lights of the land mass window and the clouds window. Also some other things I'm currently still in the process of making up.
Feel free to commend or ask anything, I'll keep you posted and show progress when I make some! |

Wow, sounds like you have much work left. The new tower looks good even without modding, and I like your idea with the led stars
BTW: Now we know you're a Star Trek fan |

Well yea the case is great looking and everything else I can recommend it to everyone who is looking for a (big) case, there is a newer model but that is just not as good as this one. Looks nice tho especially if you wanna have a door covering all your DVD players. Also it does not have a cross flow fan witch is really great cooling for your hardware.
I had to have a case without a door in it case I want to build my LCD/control screen in it.
BTW those Star Trek boxes you see are to cover up a different DVD collection. |

Cool, looks very interesting mate. I like the idea about the engraved glass. Gives your case a unique look |

Yea I hope that the effect on the engraved glass is well shown, I have some doubts cause the companies were I can get custom made glass told me that the side of the glass will have a 1 mm round finish. So that it won't be to sharp. The glass plates I will order will be 3mm thick so that leaves 1 mm on the side with clear glass were the led's can shine there light trough. So this might a problem making the effect very weak or not shown at all...
I did some tests, witch seems to work fine but well it also depends on how deep the engraving will be.
Well only way to find out is to build it |
