I wonder if some of you can give me some advice for writing a correct english grammar
One of my biggest problems is the use of "have" and "got". It's hard to find in a normal dictionary and I don't wanna bother you with a bad english
I give you some examples what I mean:
1. "I have an idea" or "I have got an idea" --> no idea what's right
2. "I get (or got) a new mouse" --> this is k IMO
3. "I have on call service this week" --> not sure about it
And, if you find mistakes in my post(s) within this thread please tell me.
BTW: I've just registered myself in the evening school for freshing up my english, still don't know if they get enough people to start the lessons though. |

I have an idea - or - I have had an idea
| Quote: | | 2. "I get (or got) a new mouse" --> this is k IMO |
'I got a new mouse' or better still, 'I have a new mouse'
| Quote: | | 3. "I have on call service this week" --> not sure about it |
I'm not sure what your trying to say here, but I suspect it should be 'I am on call service this week'
English grammer is very difficult to understand, but you'll get it eventually the best way to learn of course is go to an English speaking country for a while, and you'll start to pick it up.
The grammer on here is awful, even from us english speaking peepz, so dont rely to much on what you read here!
Any questionz, just ask my english grammer can be excellent, but I'm usually lazy when I write lol (my spelling is alwayz terrable, no matter how hard i try lol thank god for spell checkerz! ) |

Maybe this is easier to explain for someone who had to learn it in school
I learned that you would say something like:
I have got something -> English uses have + got
But you can say it as well like:
I have something
OR
I got something -> AFAIK that's more US English but not sure
Well, that's what I have learned which doesn't mean it's correct but I think it's right more or less |

its more "i've got" as in "i have got" and is very bad english because as i wil show you it clashes in its meaning.
theres hardly any differences between US English and English. mainly just spelling as in US "color" and English "Colour"
i "got" is past tense. and also requires a time reference. (hour, day, month whatever)
i "have" is delcaring you own something if you follow me.
(this is hard to explain and my english sucks too. but here is an example)
"i have 2 cats" (i own two cats)
"i got 2 cats" *when, how where......* this begs questions. it should be something more like. "i got 2 cats yesterday for my birthday"
hope it helps. |

| IMO there's a big difference between spoken and written English. People in forums and chat tend to use a mixture of these, often writing as "spoken" english (sounds confusing I know!). Different dialects use variations of grammar too, "I got" is quite acceptable as informal spoken English (where "got" replaces a verb like "bought"). |

'have got' is defenately not bad English, that at least I know. It's more if you use only got or only have:
Keep in mind I learned the British English as I was in Oxford. Above you can see how British English uses 'have got' as the regular expression. I know it because our teacher really wanted that we learn it that way and he was a professor at the Oxford University so I think he is right |

if you are going to use 'have got', it should always be contracted, ie 'I've got....you've got'
It may be correct, but it is still 'wrong' |

I don't know the exact phrase, I meant I have to sleep with my cell phone under the pillows this week If someone in my area has problems with his phone, internet connection or carrier line at 2:00 am I have to repair it.

Doesn't that only refers to speaking rather than writing?
Well again, English isn't my mother tongue so I better shut my mouth |

Well i am just aphorising that my English vocabulary is extremely poor, and of no use to you, or the next door neighbour, or even my cat for that matter
So have fun with erudition
It is also my second parlance (like you Lom and Fmc etc)
As i have no idea what most of my aphorisms are most of the time, I will leave you all to your own devises.
good luck |
